This widespread species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 216 and map 197) but also shows a tendency towards circumpolar distribution. The N. American population has been distinguished as subsp. americana Mulligan & Calder. In parts of C. and E. Europe it is uncertain or extinct. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 182.
