Syn.: Deschampsia atropurpurea (Wahlenb.) Scheele
This species has at least three disjunctly distributed lower taxa, viz. subsp. atropurpurea in N. Europe and eastern N. America and Greenland, subsp. paramushirensis (Kudo) Hult. (syn.: int. al. Deschampsia latifolia Vasey) in Pacific E. Asia and N. America and the Rocky Mts., and subsp. magellanica (Hook. fil.) Hult. in southernmost S. America. Thus the species s. lat. is bipolar. Subsp. atropurpurea belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 204 and map 186).
