1597 Ballota nigra L.

This polymorphic species occurs nowadays in most of Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. According to Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 150, six subspecies can be distinguished. The species probably originates from the Mediterranean region and the Orient. It has been introduced into eastern N. America. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 373.
