Within this variable species may, according to FI. Eur. 1/1964, p. 248, four taxa be distinguished as species, of which P. strigosum (Boenn.) Schur occurs through most of the area. Being an anthropochorous plant P. rhoeas has been widely spread, for instance into Fennoscandia, N. and S. America, Australia and New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 172.
