This species is mainly restricted to Europe. The populations on Greenland and in eastern N. America may not be indigenous (except Newfoundland?); cf. Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 120. The present distribution is amphi-atlantic (op. cit., p. 120 and map 101). It has been introduced into New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 57.
