1642 Veronica alpina L. complex
This arctic montane complex is widely but disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The population in C. and S. European mountains is distinguished as var. australis Wahlenb. (syn.: subsp. pumila [All.] Penn.), not reported in Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 244. This taxon occurs, however, also in the high mountains of Scandinavia. On this map it is included in the area of V. alpina s. str. An isolated occurrence of this species on New Foundland is described as var. terraenovae Fem. As regards the rest of N. America, V. alpina is replaced by the closely related V. wormskioldi Roem. & Schult. with same lower taxa (cf. Hultén, Fl. Alaska Neighbor. Terr., p. 803; Porsild and Cody 1980, p. 535 and maps 978, 979). These species are reported in Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 54 and maps 35 and 36. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 395.
