This arctic-montane species (with its var. intercedens Hult. on Kamchatka and the Aleutians is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The closely related species R. altaicus Laxm. in C. Asia, R. fraternus Schrenk in the Pamir-Tien-Shan mountains and R. macauleyi A. Gray in the S. Rocky Mts. Are also mapped. R. sulphureus belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 34 and map 25).
