This mainly boreal-montane species occurs in most of Europe (except extreme W, S and SE) and through Asia and N. America. Towards the south of the range it grows mostly in mountain areas. It has an almost circumpolar distribution. (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 162 and map 154). Some varieties are distinguished in Asia and N. America (I. cit.).
