This species s. lat. is here represented by subsp. maritimus in Eurasia and subsp. fueginus (Phil.) Hult. in N. America and southwards through C. and S. America (introduced in N. Europe). The very closely related R. rossicus Murb. occurs from Russia eastwards, probably through most of Siberia (cf. K. H. Rechinger in Candollea 12:9, 1949). This species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 174 and map 165).
