This species originates from Europe. It has been introduced into Asia, N. America, Australia and New Zealand. Because of confusion with A. aequalis (no. 351) knowledge of the distribution of this species is incomplete. It is reported among the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 214 and map 203).
