This widespread arctic, partly arctic-montane species s. str. (subsp. nivalis) has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. II, p. 40, 317 and map 32). In the Rocky Mts. it is replaced by subsp. lonchocarpa (Rydb.) Hult. The closely related D. kamtschatica (Ledeb.) Busch with scattered occurrences in the northern Pacific area is also mapped.
