This arctic-subartic sea-shore species belongs to the C. paleacea group (cf. no. 468). It is sometimes regarded as a subspecies or variety of C. salina Wahlenb. (no. 471). It has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 194 and map 184). Closely related taxa in the Pacific area are C. ramenskii Kom. and C. salinaeformis Mkze (California), both mapped tentatively here.
