This rather polymorphic species is mainly restricted to Europe and W. Asia. Besides the main type (subsp. cinerea) through Europe and W. Siberia the W. European subsp. atrocinerea (Brot.) Silva & Sobr. is mapped. In the Alps the closely related S. laggeri Wimmer has a restricted distribution. S. cinerea is introduced into eastern N. America.
