Within this variable species several subspecies or lower taxa have been distinguished. Hultén's remark in Circumpol. I, p. 198: "In the present stage of our knowledge it is impossible to give the range for any subdivisions", is still valid. The species s. lat. occurs as a native plant in Europe, N. Africa, Asia and N. America, although it also seems to be introduced into N. America (excl. to most of the northern part of the range). It belongs to the circumpolar plants (op. cit., 'p. 198 and map 188). Further, it has been introduced for instance into C. and S. Africa, Japan, S. America, Australia and New Zealand.
