This rather variable, arctic-montane species occurs in Eurasia and N. America. Several lower taxa are described. The population in the Alps and Pyrenees, ranking as species (W. pulchella Bertol.), is also mapped here. The species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 44 and map 38).
