This species occurs in large parts of Eurasia. To a great extent it is spread by man. It has, for example, been introduced into Fennoscandia (several casual occurrences) and N. America (at least New England). According to Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 93 (concerning Europe), it is "native only in the Alps and on mountains in the Iberian Peninsula". No doubt the map is incomplete (cf. map 495 in Atlas Fl. Eur. 5/1980). In a distinctly limited area (Spain and NW. Africa) the closely related C. exsuccum (Loscos) Uotila (Ann. Bot. Fenn. 16/1979, map p. 239) occurs.
