This widespread species s. lat. has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 172 and map 163). A few lower taxa are distinguished, viz. subsp. vaginatum in N., W. and C. Europe and eastwards through N. Asia and into northwestern N. America and subsp. spissum (Fem.) Hult. in NE. Asia and most of northern N. America and on SW. Greenland.
