This mainly Eurasiatic species grows partly on seashores, partly on saline ground inland. The distribution eastwards are incompletely known. The species has been introduced into at least same inland localities (circles). It is reported to be introduced into Newfoundland (Fernald, Manual 1950, p. 166).
