Syn.: M. collina auct. (non Hoffm.), M. hispida Schlecht.

This species occurs in Europe, N. Africa and W. Asia. Probably originating from the southeast and perhaps parts of C. Europe, it has spread as a weed towards W. and N. Europe. The northernmost occurrences are casual.
