This polymorphic species includes here the species (or subspecies) leiosperma Gram, ramosissima (Woods) Moss and dolichostachya Moss (and possibly same other lower taxa). The species s. lat. occurs along the coasts and in saline inland places in C. Europe and far eastwards. The distribution area in Asia is marked approximately. In western N. America subsp. rubra (A. Nels.) Breit. is distinguished. This species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 190 and map 181). Same taxon (or taxa) of this S. europaea group also occurs in several places in C. and S. Africa. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 135.
