This variable, arctic to subarctic-montane species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The population on Greenland is distinguished as var. groenlandica Lange and the one in N. America from Alaska to Labrador as var. nearctica Pors. On the whole the species has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 32 and map 26). The closely related C. tianschanica Rupr. in the C. Asiatic mountains is tentatively mapped.
