1. Lycopodium selago L.
Syn.: Huperzia selago (L.) Bernh.
Within the vast area of this variable species several lower taxa are distinguished (cf. Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 52, 242; F l. Eur. 1/1964, p. 3; Hultén, Fl. Alaska Neighbor. Terr. p. 25-26). The subsp. miyoshianum (Makino) Cald. & Tayl. (syn.: subsp. chinense [C. Chr.] Hult.) in western N. America and Japan etc. is marked separately on the map. The following more or less clearly defined taxa may also be mentioned, although they are not mapped here: the two closely related, probably circumpolar subspp. appressum (Desv.) D. Löve (cf. Hultén, Fl. Alaska Neighbor. Terr. map p. 25) and arcticum (Grossh.) A. & D. Löve, the subsp. patens (Beauv.) Cald. & Tayl. in N. America and subsp. dentatum (Herter) Valent. on the Azores (Sjögren in Mem. Soc. Brot. 22/1973, p. 51, maps p. 52, 53). In addition, there are several occurrences, with their special taxa, in restricted areas on the southern hemisphere (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 52, 242; cf. Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 8). Some of these are noted in the margin of the map. As to the taxonomy of the species, cf. also L. Hämet-Ahti and I. Kukkonen in Ann. Bot. Fenn. 21/1984, p. 209. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 52 and map 46).
