This species is often taken as a subspecies of B. vulgaris L. It is generally restricted to the coasts but occurs also inland towards the east. However, Ford-Lloyd & Williams (Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 71/1975, p. 92) state that "B. maritima shows a wide distribution: eastward as far as to the outer Asiatic steppes and East India, west ward to the Cape Verde and Canary Islands, and northward along the Atlantic Coast to the North Sea including the coast of the British Isles, Denmark and Sweden..'.'
