This species (with four subspecies in Fl. Eur. 2/1968, p. 195 f.) occurs in large parts of Europe and W. Asia. The closely related G. eriostemon Fisch. in C. and E. Asia and G. erianthum DC. in E. Asia and northwestern N. America are also mapped. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 260.
