This mainly boreal species occurs in N., W. and C. Europe and in eastern N. America (var. nelmesiana Raym.). Thus, it belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 176 and map 157). The distribution in E. Europe is uncertain. The closely related C. jemtlandica (Palmgr.) Palmgr., occurring mainly in C. S weden (Jämtland), is included in this map.
