This species occurs mainly in Europe (except N and E) and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. The occur rence in eastern N. America (Cape Cod, Mass.) is called J. pervetus Fern. (Fernald, Manual 1950, p. 414) and considered indigenous there, which is challenged by Hultén (Amphi-atl., p. 150). Nevertheless, the species is reported among the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, op. cit., map 132). See also maps in H. Weimarck, Sv. Bot. Tidskr. 40/1946, p. 154, and Meusel et al. 1965, p. 84. It has been introduced into New Zealand.
