This species is considered native in C., N. and E. Europe and large parts of Asia. It is cultivated within and outside this area and occurs as a rather common adventive in the flora of, for instance, N. America. Nowadays it has a discontinuous circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 218 and map 210). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 311.
