This variable species is widely distributed in Eurasia. Outside the temperate region it also occurs (introduced?) in S. India, Ceylon, the Sunda Islands and New Guinea. The distribution in Asia is somewhat disjunct. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 43.
