This species occurs in most of Europe (except the southernmost parts) and adjacent parts of Asia. It is considered to be indigenous in eastern N. America. Consequently, it belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 136 and map 118). It has been introduced into New Zealand.
