This widespread, polymorphic species is mainly arctic-montane. The typical C. saxatilis (subsp. saxatilis) is, as far as can be judged at present, restricted to N. Europe and Greenland. The rest of the almost circumpolar population (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 22, 240 and map 16) consists of the variable subsp. laxa (Trautv.) Kalela, locally hybridizing with related taxa. The E. Asiatic and NW. American C. physocarpa Presl is here included in this taxon as well as var. rhomalea Fem. in northeastern N. America. For var. miliaris (Michx) Bailey in eastern N.
