The genus Taxus was formerly represented only by T. baccata L. s. lat. with several subspecies, but is now usually divided into eight species, viz. T. baccata L. s. str. in Europe and adjacent areas, T. brevifolia Nutt. in western N. America, T. floridana Chapm. in western Florida, T. canadensis Marsh. In central and eastern N. America, T. wallichiana Zucc. In Himalaya and other S. Asiatic mountains, T. chinensis Rehd. in the interior of China and T. cuspidata Sieb. & Zucc. in E. Asia. T. globosa Schl. occurs in C. America (outside the map area). On the Azores T. baccata is probably extinct. Cf. world map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 19.
