1850 Arnica alpina (L.) Olin

Syn.: A. angustifolia J. Vahl

This polymorphic, arctic species is widely but somewhat disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The population in N. Fennoscandia is distinguished as subsp. alpina (endemic there) and that in Siberia as subsp. iljinii Maguire. Subsp. angustifolia (J. Vahl) Maguire occurs through N. America to Greenland and Spitsbergen, while subsp. intermedia (Turcz.) Maguire occurs in a restricted area in E. Siberia. Subsp. attenuata (Greene) Maguire, subsp. tomentosa (J. M. Macoun) Maguire and subsp. sornbergeri (Fem.) Maguire have their special N. American distribution. The subspp. Alpina and angustifolia together show an amphi-atlantic distribution (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 202 and map 183). The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants.
