517 Carex misandra R. Br.

This arctic-montane species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. In Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 315, it is regarded as subsp. misandra (R. Br.) Nym. of C. fuliginosa Schkuhr s. lat. It belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 20 and map 14). The population in the Alps is here distinguished as C. fuliginosa s. str. (in Fl. Eur., l. cit., subsp. fuliginosa). Furthermore, the closely related C. tristis M. B. in the Caucasus area and C. stenocarpa Turcz. in the C. Asiatic mountains are tentatively mapped. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 75.
