This species occurs in large parts of Europe and W. Asia. The distribution in Asia is partly uncertain. It has been introduced into eastern N. America, probably more than the map shows. Closely related taxa occur in E. Asia, for instance C. conspissata V. Krecz., C. nervata Franch. & Sav. and C. microtricha Franch., also considered as subspecies or varieties of C. caryophyllea (cf. Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 73).
