This polymorphic species is restricted to Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 178 f. distinguishes four subspecies and, as a separate species, M transsilvanica Schur, sometimes considered as a subspecies of M ciliata. They are mapped separately, partly preliminarily. Some of the outlying occurrences of subsp. ciliata in N. Europe are adventive or extinct. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 38.
