This species has an uncertain origin (cf. Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 207). It was sometimes cultivated and also spread as a weed in the rural landscape. It has, however, become rarer during the last century. It is probably extinct in Sweden. The closely related, mainly Mediterranean A. barbata Pott ex Link occurs S of the broken line on the map.
