308 Trisetum spicatum (L.) Richt.

The map shows the distribution of six subspecies of this polymorphic species. The mapping continues on map no. 309 (three subspecies). Subsp. spicatum is mainly an arctic-montane plant with circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 60 and map 53). Furthermore, the map presents subsp. ovatipaniculatum Hult., mainly in the Pyrenees, Apennines, Alps and Caucasus, subsp. pilosiglume (Fem.) Hult. in eastern N. America, S. Greenland and Iceland, subsp. congdonii (Scribn. & Merr.) Hult. in the W. mountains of U.S.A., subsp. mongolicum Hult. in C. Asia, and subsp. himalaicum Hult. in Himalaya. Because of occasional confusion between the subspecies in areas where they meet, the detailed mapping is locally not quite reliable. Cf. also maps I Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 47.

The map shows the distribution of three more subspecies of this widespread species (cf. map no. 308), viz. subsp. alaskanum (Nash) Hult., all the way from the Himalayas over China, Japan and the Aleutians to the Rocky Mts. and the Californian Sierras subsp. molle (Michx) Hult., from E. Siberia through Canada to Labrador and Newfoundland, and subsp. majus (Vasey) Hult. in western N. America. The maps nos. 308 and 309 are certainly incomplete and preliminary in several respects.
