This polymorphic species, intricate especially in E. Asia, has a wide disjunct distribution. The species s. str. (subsp. flexuosa) occurs in Europe and sparsely in N. America (probably native), thus being an amphi-atlantic plant (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 144 and map 125). Some subspecies (or species) are distinguished in C. and E. Asia, for instance subsp. debilis (Don) O. E. Schulz in the Himalayas, China etc. subsp. fallax O. E. Schulz in China and Japan and subsp. regeliana (Miq.) Hara (syn.: C. scutata Thunb.) in Kamchatka, Japan, Korea etc. C. flexuosa is reported from India, the Sunda Islands and the Philippines.
