Syn.: A. patula L. var. litoralis (L.) A. Gray

This widespread species occurs on seashores and in saline places inland. In some areas it is certainly adventive, for instance along the Gulf of Bothnia. It is considered to be native in N. America. Thus, it belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants, although it is not mentioned among them by Hultén, Amphi-atl. Its distribution in E. Asia is incompletely known (cf. Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 134).
