This polymorphic species (incl. C. capitatum [Willd.] Borb.) occurs in Europe, N. Africa and W. Asia. Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 57 f. reports six subspecies. It has been introduced into eastern and western N. America, S. Australia and New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 350.
