This polymorphic species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The distribution of the arctic subsp. alpinus is circumpolar. The arcticmontane subsp. glaucus (Less.) Hult. has a disjunct distribution from S. Ural eastwards through Siberia to the Rocky Mts. Subsp. stejnegeri (Vasey) Hult. occurs in the northern Pacific area (circles). Cf. Hultén, Fl.
