This widespread species originates from N. America. It has been introduced into Europe, where it has spread through the W., C. and partly N. and E. parts, and into C. and S. America, Japan and New Zealand. The species belongs today to the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 220 and map 201). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 82.
