This widespread, boreal-montane species is represented by subsp. alpinus in Europe and W. and C. Siberia and by subsp. tenuifolius (Raf.) Hult. in E. Siberia and N. America. Totally the species has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 168 and map 160).
