Syn.: Elymus caninus (L.) L., Roegneria canina (L.) Nevski

This species occurs from Europe eastwards into C. Asia. It is uncertain whether this species or other taxa occur in E. and SE. Asia. It has been locally introduced into N. America. The detailed distribution there is, however, at present insufficiently known and incompletely marked on the map. In the Mediterranean region the closely related A. panormitanum (Bert.) Parl. also occurs (map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 44).
