This polymorphic species is here represented by subsp. arundinacea in large parts of Europe, subsp. orientalis (Hack.) Tzvel. in E. Europe and adjacent part of Asia and subsp. fenas (Lag.) Arcang. in S. Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. The species has been introduced into S. Africa, Japan, N. and S. America and New Zealand.
