This arctic-montane species with west-arctic distribution belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 186 and map 168). Some differences have been pointed out between the populations in W. America (var. hepburnii [Boott] Kiik.) and in the rest of the total range (I. cit.; cf., however, Porsild in Nat. Mus. Can. 1974, Publ. Bot. 4, p. 12).
