This rather widespread weed originates from the Mediterranean region and adjacent parts of W. Asia. It was earlier cultivated more and spread to C. and N. Europe, parts of Africa, W. Asia, N. and S. America, Australia and New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 194.
