This species is mainly restricted to the arctic and montane regions of Europe and N. America. In the easternmost part of the Eurasiatic range hybrids with S. nummularia Anderss. probably dominate. The approximate distribution area of the closely related Asiatic S. turczanninovii Lakschew. ex Printz is also presented here. European fossil records of interglacial and of Wurm-glacial - late-glacial age outside the recent area are marked on the map (cf. Tralau in Ark. Bot., K. Vet. Ak., Stockh., 5/1963, map p. 553). This species belongs to the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 42 and map 24). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965 map p. 114.
