This rather variable species occurs in nearly the whole of Europe and parts of N. Africa and C. Asia. Cf. map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 53. Its dispersal Has been favoured by clearings in the rural landscape. It has been introduced into several parts of the world, for instance E. Africa, E. Asia, India, N. and S. America, Australia and New Zealand. An alpine taxon (var. furumii [Honda] Ohwi) is indigenous to Japan. The present distribution of the species is circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 204 and map 194).
