This widespread species originates from Europe. It is adventive in outlying localities in N. Europe and has been introduced and widely spread in N. America. Furthermore, it has been introduced into Japan, S. America, Tasmania and New Zealand. The present distribution may be regarded as circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 218 and map 207), although there seems to be a wide gap in C. and E. Siberia. However, the map is probably incomplete as to these areas.
